I saw this video by chance the other day while C.Ray was flipping through music videos on Pitchfork.tv and I was mesmerized! I had this really strange emotional reaction to it; like pop rocks and soda were exploding in my chest! I think the whole video screams freedom. It totally made me want to stand in the middle of the living room and jump up and down yelling at the top of my lungs! Love it, love it, love it.

Do yourself a favor and watch the whole video, even if the beginning isn't grabbing you right away.

On April 15th Wooden Satellites will be performing with The Poison Control Center from Iowa and Chrash from Illinois. I made the poster for it. The image is a collage of about 6 different images with some vector elements added. All the images were pulled from Google Images. The main photo is a shot taken from the Catherine Malandrino website.

I have a weak spot for fashion magazines... and cherry coke... and mystery shows on PBS... but back to fashion magazines. For a long time I had a subscription to Vogue and getting it in the mail once a month was always a highlight; now I'm thinking I should renew my subscription!

I was grocery shopping at Meijer today and I saw the latest issue on the stands and it just cried out to be purchased. The movement of the photo and that fantastic red hair set her apart from the walls of front facing blondes and brunettes surrounding her. Also, that is a STUNNING dress. Wowzers! Way to go, Vogue! Excellent Cover.

Grisly First Day of Spring

Today was the first day of Spring! Amazing! It's been a long winter and I'm so ready for the sun. Today was also a Vinyl/CD flee market at a pavilion at a city park so C.Ray and I went over to check it out. I just couldn't stay inside and decided I would take a walk around the pond next to the pavilion. It turned out to be a mistake. I guess after the ice and snow melted all the animals that had died during the winter were just left exposed... I took some photos just to show C.Ray proof of the grisly scene... he asked if I had taken a walk to the pond or to hell.

Not exactly the introduction to spring that I was hoping for.

This week I'm focusing on creating a new portfolio design. I am really unhappy with what I have up now, it was done very quickly without much research and it's less than basic. So this time around I'm working towards something much better. Still minimalist which is the style I'm most gravitating towards these days, but much more 'designed'.

Site Inspire has been my go to guide for all things web through this. If you know anything about my work you know that I'm mainly a print designer so venturing into the world of web layout has been a learning experience. Lots of these site are inspiring me to take some beautiful photography of my work as well; it makes a good portfolio site into a spectacular one. I see an afternoon project in my future. Good thing the sun is showing its face again, I love natural light in photographs.

I've been working on a lot of Wooden Satellites artwork this week. We just finished recording our first professionally recorded album (so excited!) and I've been working on artwork and posters for the album and the release show! I am keeping most of it under my hat so it will be a bit of a surprise on the day of the release (TBA).

But in the mean time I'm working on a poster for a local booking agency, Chain Smoking Records. At the end of the month The Bears of Blue River will be performing at the Brass Rail along with local favorite Jon Keller. While designing the poster I've been enjoying the folksie goodness of The Bears. Check them out here.

For this poster I am going back to the typography style that I was working with early last year. It's fun, detailed work that I really get lost in. I spent 3 hours on it yesterday drinking a Ginger Ale and watching "Pirate Radio". Good times. I'll post the full poster when it's done in the next day or two!

Ok! Getting back in the saddle! I realize it's been forever since I posted. C.Ray and I have been moving and also I've been lazy.

Today I worked on Album Art for my friend Eric's band. They are a metal two piece called 'Rocket Lazerz' ... yes, they's LaZerZ with two Zs... they're just that awesome. The main image in this piece is a pen and ink drawing by Gustave Dore from a 1857. Google him. Seriously. His work is amazing.

All the credit goes to The Watchmen Comic, which is where I found all the original images. I chopped them up, gave them a little bitmap treatment and added the mustache.

Steep Holm is a small, uninhabited island in the Bristol Channel off of Great Britain. I wanted to go kind of 70's on this one since the Island was made into a land trust in 1976. The font is a little modern to be 1970's but I think it works.

Project Runway

I don't watch reality TV. But I got bored. So I did. The first episode of Season 7 of Project Runway started last week and I'm kind of loving it. I really like Amy Sarabi a lot so far, not because of what I saw on the show obviously since she had about 5 minutes on screen, but from what I saw on her website. It's still under construction but these dresses are to die for (The model's hair is another story)!

I was short on inspiration for a project today (and in a fairly black mood thanks to playing phone tag with my college loan office... ick) so I hopped over to my pal Brooke's website to take a look at what she was up to. She too has taken on the Design Everyday Challenge. Her last two posts have been some pretty typographic posters so I thought I'd try my hand at one as well. I think I got in a little over my head for a one day project so I'm going to have to post this one in two sections.

#5 Wikipedia Album Art

Today's design is a little strange I guess. It was a good exercise in using what you've got. I took the idea from Mike Duesenberg who is doing 365 Album Covers. He generates a random article on Wikipedia, uses the title of the article as his band name and then uses the last 3-5 words of the article as his album title. For the artwork he uses a picture from the Wikipedia page as the main image.

I got an article on the climate of Mumbai in India. I'm not sure how successful this project was, but it was interesting anyway and having to figure out how to use an image that was small and low res was a good challenge.

The most important thing I learned doing this particular project... if you're going to start and finish something all at once don't start at 9pm!

Noughties Time Capsule

This is a fantastic website! Have fun looking through the artwork that Thunder Chunky compiled from a group of artists who were asked what piece of work best described their Noughties (Decade of 2000-2010 if you've never heard that term)!

I, having only begun my journey in art and design in 2005, don't really have a wide range of pieces to choose from. I spent most of the Noughties in school, learning and trying to find my place in the design world (still working on that one!). Graduation was my most significant milestone, so if I had to choose a piece that represented my decade it would most certainly be the Love Birds Print that was the center of and inspiration for my Greenbird BFA Exhibition.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, thank you, Joy, for inspiring me to create this!

#3 January Desktop

So, even though it is already January I thought I'd make a January desktop for my design of the day. (Next month it'll be ready by the first!)

I went with a peacock theme because, "The peacock is considered to be a bird of protection and safe guarding." In some countries the peacock is a symbol of good luck; and we all need a little bit of that in the new year!

I am including two different screen resolutions for you to pick from!

The Annunciation

I love religious art of all kinds, it's so steeped in devotion and symbolism. So, I thought I'd take the time to post a few of my favorite paintings of the The Annunciation in honor of the holiday. I know that technically the birth of Jesus would be a more timely subject, since we're already so close to Christmas day, but honestly I like The Annunciation better, it's so intimate.

This collection is a varied over time and style, especially the last piece which I just found today while collecting images.

Abandoned Places

I stumbled Stages of Decay by Julia Solis recently and it is hard to say how it made me feel. Abandoned places have always held a special place in my heart, as I am sure they do for many people. There is something so captivating and ultimately sad about them. Some of these theaters are grand and some a very humble, but they all have a quiet charm and sadness.

I want to buy a place like this and fix it up for shows!

I think that is it. Pretty much a can do list besides the whole stop being sick thing... but I just thought I'd throw that out there just in case my body is paying attention.

Graphic Design IV Catch Up

Here's one of the ads for a project I have been working on for my Graphic Design IV Class. I have to come up with a clothing company, make an ad, a logo, a tag and a website along with 6 illustrated clothing designs.

I am showing this ad (on the right) next to the original photo (on the left) that I found on flickr. Since it is a really photographic ad I wanted to show how much work I actually did on the photo to fit my colorful, whimsical, somewhat washed out style.

As you can see I named the clothing company Slenderslacks.
